Notes from "Slow Death By Rubber Duck" Chapter Four: 'The New PCS's'

Flame retardant:
Gay-Lussac credited with figuring out the scientific basis of fire retardancy using ammonium salts of sulphuric, hydrochloric, and phosphoric acid.

Bromine discovered in a French saltwater marsh.  Bromine related to chlorine, fluorine, and iodine (together called the 'halogen' elements).  Brominated flame retardants (BFR's).

Dr. Ake Bergman:  Advocate for removing additive brominated compounds that are lipophilic (they accumulate in our fat tissue).

The demise of leaded gasoline saw the emergence of BFR's as flame retardants as bromine companies needed to dream up new applications for their product.

*  More notes to follow including commentary from my Father who worked for Velsicol Chemical Co. in Chicago and has mentioned the flame retardant childrens PJ's debaucle many times.
